A show that spans multiple decades… but in reverse? Damascus Theatre Company presents Merrily We Roll Along at the famous Gaithersburg Arts Barn. Directed by Keith Edward, Merrily tells the story of three “old friends”, Franklin, Charlie, and Mary, and their writing journey. Edward’s direction was clear, the staging was clever, and his concept was fascinating (pay attention to the changes to the set over time.)
Technically, the show had some opening night challenges. Designed by Rick Swink, the lighting of the show was vibrant – however at a few random points the lights would shut off/change at points they were not supposed to. And when actors would stand downstage, they would rarely be lit. On the other hand, the sound design of the show (also designed by Swink) was phenomenal. Swink’s use of sound, both recorded as a cue and live use of sound really helped bring the show to life.
In a musical, of course we need to talk about the singing and dancing. With musical direction by Owen Posnett, the cast has a tight and powerful sound. Two standout vocal moments were the ensemble in “Now You Know”, and the four-way harmony in “Opening Doors”. As for Megan McNellage’s choreography, it’s fairly simple and fits the realism and grounded tone of the show. That being said, her mores surreal choreography in “The Blob” was a real standout moment in the show.
In a show like Merrily, it’s imperative you have a strong ensemble. And fortunately, this ensemble has such a high vocal caliber. However, there were some repeated issues with ensemble entrances (they sound so good though, it almost doesn’t matter.) I want to specially shout out Alex Mamalian and Ryan Muha for their hilarious ensemble interactions.
Delving into some of the supporting characters, Bill Brown owns the stage as Joe with his gravitas and confidence. Kristina Friedgen brings the laughs as Gussie, and gives a great Act 2 opener. Jacob Williamson is adorable as Franklin Jr. And Tianna Leon gives a very nice portrayal of Meg at the beginning of the show.
Heartbreaking and high-note singing, Faith Wang is a complete standout as Beth Spencer. Both of her renditions of “Not a Day Goes By” won’t fail to bring a tear to your eye. Wang owns the stage whenever she’s on it, and my only complaint is there wasn’t more of her in the show.
And then there were three! Leading the show with a beautiful and dynamic singing voice, Ethan Kahwaty plays the enigmatic Franklin Shepard. While his voice (and piano playing) was incredible, his acting fell a little flat compared to his primary scene partners, especially in emotionally-charged moments. Even so, you still find yourself rooting for Shepard throughout the show – wanting the best for him and his friendship.
As Shepard’s right-hand man, Adam Esrig OWNS the stage as Charley Kringas. I am not being dramatic when I say Esrig’s rendition of “Franklin Shepard Inc” was one of the best live performances of a song I’ve ever seen. Esrig portrays Charlie with unparalleled nuance and gives a performance worth the cost of admission alone.
In my opinion, the heart and soul of this production was Neva Keroglian Sullivan as Mary. From the second Sullivan took the stage, it almost felt like it was her show. Whenever she left the stage, you were excited for her to come back. With impeccable comedic timing, a vibrant voice, and stage presence for days – Sullivan owns not only her role, but this show. I wouldn’t be shocked if she was voted “Most Likely to be on Broadway” superlative in high school. Also there’s a moment involving a recorder that was jaw-droppingly funny.
Time moving in reverse, the writing of musicals, piano playing, ominous recorders – what else could you want in a show? Come on down to the Arts Barn to see Merrily We Roll Along today!!
